The Department for Education has clarified the roles that are considered critical to the COVID-19 response, and the process that key workers should follow to ensure their child can continue in education during this period. The key worker roles include Transport, which is defined as: “those who will keep the air, water, road and rail passenger and freight transport modes operating during the COVID-19 response, including those working on transport systems through which supply chains pass.”

It is not clear if this includes leisure tourism aspects of an operation but may cover those who have bus and scheduled coach operations (and presumably home-to-school transport if required).

The government stresses that if it is possible for children to stay at home then they should be.

If workers think they fall within a key worker category, they should confirm with their employer that, based on their business continuity arrangements, their specific role is necessary for the continuation of this essential public service.

If your school is closed, then please contact the local authority, who will seek to redirect to a local school in your area that children can attend.

The Government has also confirmed that only one parent needs to be classed as a key worker for this guidance to apply.
